I've put all the usual rally and racing games on my retroid pocket but I was looking for some suggestions for either pick up n play platformers or obscure 3d adventures.
What ps1 titles would you recommend?

Not really obscure, but have you ever played through Soul Reaver? I really enjoyed my run through the DC version, PS1 isn't miles off and should still look good on the small screen.
The Adventures of Lomax is a pretty polished 2D platformer that doesn't get mentioned that much.

Yeah I have the DC version. I love it. I'll check out Lonax. Cheers.

Syphon Filter I recommend. On that note, the PSP Syphon Filter games were pretty good.

As far as platformers go I like the first Croc. Cool music and is pretty challenging if you try to collect everything and clear the levels properly. Croc 2 is good as well but I prefer the first one as it feels more focused.
The Medievil games are fantastic too. Again, the first one is better imo, even though the sequel adds more stuff (it just kind of dilutes the 'purity' of the first one and has some very frustrating stages).
Also need to suggest PS1 version of DOOM. That would be ace on the RP.
Other random stuff I like for PS1: Sanvein Silent Bomber Einhander Space Invaders (the remake one known as Space Invaders X in Japan - has awesome power-ups and massive bullet-hell/shmup-esque bosses)

If you're having Space Invaders, I'm throwing Tempest X into the hat.
40 Winks? Never played it, might even own it, always thought it looked decent in that generic cutesy 3D platformer way of the 90s.
Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time. Only briefly played this a while back and I think it was decent. Might have been the sequel with Taz though. Can't really remember, but I reckon it'll have passed most by.
Die Hard. Shonky 3D and the controls might be a mess these days, but I remember loving wandering round Nakatomi Plaza in my vest.
Frogger. Only ever played the demo of this, and a later sequel, but it's an interesting rehash of the theme that tries to expand the basic gameplay while retaining enough of the old game to still be Frogger.
Harry Potter. Never played these, but I probably should at some point. Certainly look like they hold up.
Jumping Flash. The in between tunnel segments are pretty poor, but the core platforming game is still good. I put off playing this for ages when I got it as I didn't fancy it, ended up loving it.
MDK. Not exactly an unknown, but it is a great game.
Skullmonkeys. Fairly traditional platform in most respects, but the visuals stand out with its claymation style.
And a few other 'off topic' ones I like...
Adidas Power Soccer is one of the few footie games I've ever owned and I had a blast with it. It's probably horribly flawed, but I like it's general 'serious' tone then you hit the ball like a cannon and blow the keeper to the back of the net. I might be the only person who likes this, I've never heard anyone else do anything but criticise it.
Space Hulk. The PS1 might be the best version of this, a blend of 2D planning on a map and first person action.
Bloody Roar 2 is a decent fighter I hadn't come across til recently, it not really being my genre.
Descent. Never a pretty game, but it plays well if you know what you're doing, it's one of those rare games that really takes you into three dimensions with its twisty turny tunnels to disorient you.
Syndicate Wars. Needs no introduction, I can't get past the last mission, but this was awesome.
Oh, and Wipeout 2097, naturally.

Harry Potter. Never played these, but I probably should at some point. Certainly look like they hold up. I have Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge on the PS1 and it's a pretty fun game. For some reason I love the early garden levels with the lawnmower enemies and always think of them immediately when thinking of the game.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released as Sorcerer's Stone in the US if you need to be specific for searching) is actually really good though being a fan of the books/movies is probably a pre-requisite. The only two bits that I can't stand are the Gringotts Bank rollercoaster bits (you HAVE to collect every single gem if you want to 100% the game with all collectables) and the Superman 64-esque Quidditch training with flying through bloody rings. Both stages have really annoying music that you will hear in your nightmares if you keep buggering them up and constantly have to restart them.
Also forgot to mention Kula World! Seems like a perfect fit for handheld gaming. Could never get beyond more than 60-something levels (out of a 100 I believe) before it got too brain-taxing for me.

I thought about Kula World, but tried it again not too long ago and thought it had dated horribly.

Not saying you are wrong btw, but I always considered it a minimalist-looking game with not much in the way of graphics to "go bad" with the years, and the gameplay is just a puzzler.
Might be a bit biased as I really love the minimalist, almost indie look to the game.

Control mainly, it felt sort of clunky and awkward to play, maybe the camera compounded that. I can't be specific as I've a bad memory, I just remember thinking it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered and it just wasn't as compelling a game because of it.

Yeah, it is hard sometimes to see all of the sides of the structures with how the camera is set up and it can send your head spinning trying to remember where you've been. I guess it's part of the puzzle/brain game aspect but I definitely agree that the camera isn't always your best friend.
