Nah, PSP has LOADS of great games. The problem is that there were a lot of games (especially early doors) that tried to be portable versions of their bigger console brothers of the time and many ended up like shit once the novelty wore off. The controls just weren't there and you always felt as if you were playing a watered-down, poor man's version of the PS2/PS3 version.
Some managed to be decent (God of War, Motorstorm Arctic Edge, Tekken, Outrun 2006, and the GTAs) but there was always the sense that you'd rather just play the 'real' thing.
Once the mass market got tired of the novelty of Playstation IPs on the go - and the fashion statement of a 'grown-up' handheld - the PSP was always doomed.
But if you stick to the console's strengths and its original games then there's loads. Puzzle games, RPGs, retro compilations, and tactical games all flourish. Stuff like Lumines, FF Tactics: War of the Lions, Darius Burst, Persona 3 Portable, Metal Slug Anthology, and Puzzle Quest are all great games just to name a few. I feel it's one of those platforms where you need to dig below the surface and the 'big' games to truly enjoy it. Unfortunately that means seeking out software that was probably not readily available on mainstream shop shelves or needs importing but the gold IS there, in a larger quantity than most other failed systems that rely on "hidden gems".

I loved my PSP. I did have to learn how to hold it so it didn't ache, as the default grip was painful, but as a system it was awesome. Got mine near launch with Pursuit Force which blew me away, then got Wipeout on it which was phenomenal. There's loads of great games.

I was late to the PSP party but I grabbed lots of games cheap and really liked it. Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions alone got about 200 hours out of me.

You tried Field Commander on PSP? It's pretty much Advance Wars, but with a harder scifi military aesthetic instead of the cartoon look of AW.

In terms of PSP real games, I had a bit of fun with its version of Katamari (it had a great ending from what I remember) and one of those Motorcross games. I didn't get on with much else on there. Despite being way worse in terms of capability, I think I played and enjoyed the DS more.

I don't think I could've done anything gripwise to make it comftable for me tbh, I just have those kind of hands.
I do get there are some games that really do sell the system but theres not been enough for me to warrent getting a revised one, atleast from what games I've seen, unless it was so cheap I couldn't pass it up like my £1 NGPC

I suppose the switch, only this year have I started playing it on a regular basis. Can't really pinpoint why either, it just didn't grab like other Ninty consoles have in the past. Not liking BOTW probably didn't help or the fact it shared its time with the ps4, my fave ever console.
OG xbox. Put me off getting a 360 or xbone.

I warmed to the PSP considerably once it got hacked and you could put emulators on it. This. PSP games were generally pretty rubbish I thought. But as a machine to tinker with and do emulation shit, it was great. Decent Speccy emulator on there too. Generally, the PSP has the stronger/superior emulators, but the Speccy emulator for the Nintendo DS is particularly brilliant, especially as the bottom touch screen can be used for the keyboard and settings, while the top screen is a pixel perfect representation of the OG speccy at 256 x 192! Runs at full speed of course, as you'd expect, given the Speccy is about as powerful as a casio wrist watch.

If we're talking ZXDS for Speccy emulation, I'll prompt anyone who uses it to make a small donation to the developer. I did so in the past and got a lovely reply in which he stated how unusual it was for anyone to actually do that, there's only a handful of the many thousands of users who bother. ZXDS is such a high quality product that works so well with the DS, I don't find it at all unreasonable to promote and suggest donating.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to beat on the PSP's own library too hard. I'm having fun emulating it on the Retroid at the moment, and having fast loading, better controls and a 2x upscale on the graphics does a lot to elevate the AAA-on-the-go games that didn't quite deliver on the original hardware.

I no longer own a DS but I do occasionally think I'd like one just for ZXDS. As Seph says, the bottom screen keyboard feature was amazing for Speccy stuff. Can you even buy R4 cards anymore? Is ZXDS still supported in terms of development?

Actually, thinking about I didn't warm to the Vita for ages either.
I got it, fired up a couple of games (one of which was LBP which I've never liked) and then it disappeared into a drawer for ages. Eventually though it definitely got its usage. Especially when I started up my review site.
I've not got an everlasting love for it though. Eventually when the review games dried up for it, I lashed it on eBay.

My personal Set Up is a 2DS kids one thats been hacked with a 32gb card in the machine and then a Super Card Two in the cart slot with a 32gb cart in that.

My personal Set Up is a 2DS kids one thats been hacked with a 32gb card in the machine and then a Super Card Two in the cart slot with a 32gb cart in that. Yeah, most R4 cards today work on both DS and 3DS, and are cheap. The only downside of playing ZXDS and other speccy emulators on a 3DS is that its not a pixel perfect match unlike its older brother (looks less sharp as its filled to the larger res), plus a DS Lite is much cheaper to get hold of these days. You can hold start/select together when launching DS software on 3DS to run in 256 x 192 resolution, but it creates a vast border all round both screens, where as on the DS it fits perfectly into the screen. ZXDS might still be developed, but its perfect as it is to be fair, so not sure if much more can be done anyway. I know the Colecovision DS/3DS emulator is still being updated though, and that is also fabulous!
