I think games like BOTW, Skyrim and Witcher 3 are different but comparable games. Which is better is very much personal choice, but the reason I suspect BOTW2 will be the greatest game ever made is because I think Nintendo will try to take BOTW and open world games of this type to the next level.
I think with BOTW Nintendo were playing catch up to the likes of Skyrim and Witcher and wanted to plant their flag in the open world RPG genre. Now they've arguably caught up and now have seen what the competition has produced recently, I think they will attempt to raise the bar, as swell as polish up what worked from the first game and fix what didn't. The extra time they're taking suggests to me they are trying to get it perfect, and when you think about the games Nintendo actually develops in house this (along with the next 3D Mario) is where you'd expect much of Nintendo's development resources to go, to produce system selling, must play quality, flagship titles.
I could be wrong and BOTW2 could just be more of the same, but I think significant improvement over the already much celebrated original should propel BOTW2 to GGOAT status.

You say Skyrim is one note when out in the wilds, I'd claim BotW is worse, it's so empty. I adore BotW's world. I'm still wowed by the scenery and different locations 170 hours in, and how the darkness and weather can change how everything looks and feels. One of my hobbies was hiking in the wilderness, and I haven't been able to do much of that since lockdown started. I was knocked over by a dog 18 months ago and as a result of the injuries have barely been able to hike. I feel like I might've had a breakdown without Hyrule to wander, and I thought I was past the stage where I could love a game so much. It's been a revelation for me. You tried it in VR? I have the cardboard VR thing for my switch but never did get round to BotW once they put that update in.

You're not missing much. Like most cardboard VR it's fun for a five minute demo, but you're probably not going to sink a huge amount of time into it.
More specifically, the frame rate and resolution are too low to be truly convincing, the motion tracking lags and it's prone to drifting.
I dare say that they could make a better crack of it with the sort of hardware Meta and Valve are using, but that'll probably have to wait for another generation of consoles.

For me the best game is Resident Evil 4. Although it's not my absolute favourite game, in terms of criteria to judge Resi 4 is the best.
The problem with something like Skyrim (and indeed any open world game) is that there's a lot of travelling. Travelling isn't gameplay. It's like when everyone wanked off about GTA4. Sure it's a good game but you spend a lot of time driving to the mission start. Skyrim, like Oblivion before it, had a lot of that. Resi Evil 4 is linear. For most of its run-time you are either doing something or looking at something cool.
Then I want big memorable set pieces. Sure, you'll get moments in open world games. I've not played BOTW but I assume at some point it can't all be nice valleys and stuff, there must be moments of wow for it to get the scores it did. Well, Resi 4 has tons of them. From the cabin siege early on to the massive boss battles. There was always something around the corner where you'd just be like 'wow, that's impressive.'
I don't want a game that's 60 hours long. I want a game that I can replay for 60 hours if I want to because it's so good. That's Resi 4.
I want a game that actually requires some skills and lets me show them off. A lot of open world games are just HOURS of doing moderately easy stuff. Look at Far Cry 6, it's trivially easy. Probably 80 hours of game there if you want to max it out or whatever. Resi 4 lets you shoot arrows out the air with a pistol, it rewards targeted shooting. It's just great.
And I don't want a game where it all looks like one thing. Be it Skyrim with it's boring snowy environment, or Horizon Zero Dawn with it's boring snowy environment or God of War etc etc etc. Snow is shit. I'll take a bit, sure. But I want to see different things. That's why Oblivion is better than Skyrim. And duck off if your whole game is set in a desert (Mad Max) or dusty plains (Red Dead). Resi mixes it up.
Also I want weapon upgrades that make a difference and make me feel more powerful as I go along. Resi 4 was great for that.
If I'm not doing something worth doing or seeing something worth seeing, then it's dead gameplay and Resi 4 is pretty much perfect on that front.

I bought Resident Evil 4 again this week as it was finally on sale at a decent price on the Quest 2. Quite looking forward to trying it out in VR.

Resi 4 is definitely a desert island disc for me. One of the greats with incredible replay value and perfect pacing. Can't say how many times I have completed it though it was definitely 9 times on the Gamecube and pushing double-digits on the Wii, with a few Pro play-throughs as well, and silly numbers of hours on the almighty Mercs.
Re. BOTW: the game world is definitely empty but I did immensely enjoy just gliding off cliffs and feeling like an adventurer. I only stopped playing as I left it alone for too long, forgot what I was doing, and felt intimidated by the size and scope of the game to try and figure my way back in; something I feel about a lot of massive open-world games - you MUST just keep going and not take a break that's too long.
The thing that I liked is that the wide-open vistas looked lush, the water was beautiful, and the general bright colourful landscape just looked captivating, regardless of whether there was much going on.
It was the Wii-U version of BOTW that I played. Quite tempted to buy it again on the Switch and start over.

RE4 is great. Yeah it's not the classic Resi which I also love, but it was great fun for what it was, one of my most replayed games also.
I don't think the 'emptiness' of BOTW is an issue, if there was something every ten steps then you wouldn't have the same sense of exploration and discovery. That said the hundreds of Koroks to find are often hiding in plain sight so areas may not seem as empty as they appear. Also when you near the end of the game and zoom out on the map screen the map is littered with places of interest.

First Resi game I ever played was in fact No. 5 on the 360. Actually quite liked it for a while until a few chapters, whereupon I was chased around and then insta-killed by a very big nasty brutish thing.
Had pretty much the same experience with the first Dead Space. I've not been back to either. Don't like zombies, and don't really enjoy that sort of game, if I'm honest.

The Grand Prix series - starting with the Amiga. Ok, I was enjoying motor sport at the time, but this was such a massive leap in terms of simulation - particularly GP1 and 2 - I was sad enough to sit and do full races on these.

Possibly Super Mario Bros. 3, it is a very good game, and is a very great leap forward in the platforming genre. Not only that but it introduced a ton of new characters and lore to the franchise.
Ms. Pac-Man is also up there, enhancing an already fun and addicting game and making it better (in my opinion).

I probably change my opinion every time I'm asked this question. Super Mario 64 on N64 and Metal Gear Solid on the original Playstation do tend to stick out in my memory - in terms of being totally captivated by the experience.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also made a good impression (as did Red Dead 1).
Tetris DS is probably my favourite version of the all-time classic, put stupid amounts of hours into that one. Infinite replayability as already mentioned!

This is tough, to call a GOAT, or at least a personal favourite.
Overall, game for game, I'd have to go with Doom. Or the exact specific, the Doom/Doom 2 PS1 version.
There are so many classics over so many formats it is tough to call. My usual preference is to the golden age of arcade games, those 80s coin ops. Favourite genre seems to be survival horror. There's some classics I've spent an age on- Lode Runner, Flashback, Sentinel. But game for game, it has to be Doom. It's just pure fun.

I think Antiriad2097 might have something to add on the "Rise of the Robots"? Nothing to do with games, so technically off topic. But let's not let pedantry get in the way, eh?
