Not sure if this has been reported but the Retro gameing community has lost one of the greats 24/12/2022 in Archer Maclean. One of the true greats in 8bit and beyond. Not much i can say really but wiki will say it all , and its been updated right up until his passing. RIP Archer. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archer_Maclean

Goodness me! Thatโs no age. Dropzone and IK(+) - so many joyous hours spent on these. Thanks for the good times, Archer.

I read somewhere he'd been ill for a while, not sure if that's accurate. I'm sure RG will have some more detail when they give him a proper write up. I met him once after a talk at a retro show in the mid 2000s, his newly formed company had signed on with Bethesda and he was so keen about the publishing partnership. He showed off their new game on the Wii, I think it was called Speedzone at the time. It was later changed to Wheelspin and I read somewhere a few years later that he hated the relationship with Bethesda and that changing the name was out of his control... he said something like it was such a dumb name as the last thing you'd want to do was wheelspin - a very fair point.
RIP Archer.

Huge shock As someone that didnโt grow up with 8 bit machines, I was told by a friend that Pool Paradise and Mercury were must buys because Archer was a legend.

Sad to hear it.
I'll be playing a few rounds of IK+ in his honour later today.

Really sad news, I got to meet Archer at various retro events - and also interview him live a few times. Such a genuine and likeable guy.

I read somewhere he'd been ill for a while, not sure if that's accurate. Somebody posted on RLLMUK that Archer had been fighting cancer for some time now (if that's true).
I did really enjoy Mercury on the PSP though I was absolutely terrible at it and didn't get very far.
Never did get around to Wheelspin on the Wii - I know it reviewed pretty "meh" at the time but I don't necessarily take magazine reviews at the gospel when we all know how biased and uninformed they can be. Has anybody here actually played it?

RIP Archer. Were you at the Sheffield Retro event? I took my chipped Wii and had a ummm, hacked Wheelspin on it. We were playing it on the projector and Archer came up behind me and asked where on Earth I'd got the game as it wasn't out in the UK yet - and would be called something else!!!! I of course lied and said I'd imported it from the US and stored it on my Wii hard drive (attached at the time). He said 'ok, great, ;et me show you how to play it' and went on to be about the only person that could actually play the bloody game it was a bit rubbish. But the loss of Archer is HUGE He was such a genuinely lovely guys - I'm pretty sure it was at that event he went for a curry with us. We also had a curry with Chris Wilkins and Archer. What a shite run up to Christmas - so many great people passing away

I did buy it when it came out and struggled with it too, sold it soon after. Speedzone is a much better name that Wheelspin.
