And I mean game series' you were PROPER into.
The topic comes to mind as I adored the GTAIII-SA era of GTA games, and really enjoyed IV and V too. However, I cannot get excited at all for GTA6 now that bits of info have been leaked about it. All of the talk of Rockstar cleaning up the "culture" in their offices makes me wonder just how neutered the new game will be and how unwilling it will be to be a savage pisstake of western society and culture like the old ones. Hopefully it just means that R* have kicked out some d!ckheads or toxic people but, even so, it doesn't fill me with confidence.
But, even without that, the way they botched the Remastered package and their handling of it just really turned me off continuing to support them with purchases. That and how they've settled into just raking money in from GTA Online over the years makes me think 6 will be all about the online and saddled with microtransactions and the like. I just cannot get excited for any of it and I don't even care about GTA6 (something I never thought I'd say).
Another are the Pokemon games. Started from the very beginning and bought each sequel religiously, pumping hundreds of hours into each one; thousands across the gens. However, I just suddenly stopped at Black/White and could never find the enthusiasm to get back into it. It wasn't a gradual fading away, just a sudden point-blank loss of interest in continuing. I love going back over the old games but the new stuff? Nah, I don't care how impressive it is - I'm just not interested anymore.
Anybody else experienced similar?

Pro Evolution Soccer and the football sim genre as a whole.
I used to play Pro Evo almost daily at one point, ploughing through season after season. I really enjoyed it but it was a real time sink that left me a huge backlog of other games, so I've stopped playing PES (and FIFA too).
I'll still play an arcadey footy game like Mario Strikers but if I was to ever play a proper football sim game now I would just do a World Cup at most, just a short tournament rather than a multiple season career mode.

The two big ones for me are Pro Evolution Soccer, I spent 6 years playing them on PS2, mostly with friends. The other is Football Manager (Championship Manager back in the day). I spent years playing these solidly, gave up around 2006 when they became about talking to players moreso than just being able to play a full season in an evening.

Both FIFA and PES (now eFootball) both vanished down the microtransaction rabbit hole. They might as well be gacha games now. I guess there are still relatively normal modes in there, both for single and multiplayer, but their main mechanic seems to involve spending real world money to buy fantasy teams.

Diablo.
I used to be MAJORLY into anything Blizzard did. After the merger with Activision they quickly changed into a company that was a shadow of their former selves. First sign of that was telling singleplayer focused gamers to bugger off (in a RPS interview) during the development of Diablo 3. I was out after that. Companies slipped lower since.

GTA here too. Up to GTA San Andreas. I've not even bothered with anything since. Vice City is still my fave!

GTA went a bit to grey and real for me, I preferred early crazy ones, that's why I kind of drifted from gta to saints row.

Will also add Final Fantasy to my list.
Played pretty much all of them up to IX and was always hardcore into maxing out characters, collecting everything etc. FFVIII even has the honour of being my favourite game of all-time!
Yet...I just can't be arsed with the series anymore. I had a GC instead of a PS2 to begin with so I missed out on X and X-2, XII always seemed like a massive, daunting prospect to get into, wasn't interested in the online XI, and the XIII series just didn't seem like a classic FF so I never bothered with those. XIV was online again so didn't bother and XV...dunno, just didn't care anymore. I think the newer ones have gotten so far away from mages and medievil-style fantasy that I'm just not interest. VII and VIII were arguably similar in that respect but I guess I was just in the right place at the right time to enjoy them.
Another reason is that I always MUCH preferred the ATB battle system over the newer action-game format which isn't an RPG imo.
The latest FFs are these FFVII remake chapters but they've changed so much and are messing about with the storyline to such a crazy extent that you need to research deeply into it to understand what is happening and how multiple realities are involved, and where the original FFVII timeline splits off etc....it just gives me a headache! Not saying that it isn't a good game in its own right (because I haven't physically played it to comment) but I just wanted a super-duper remake that retained the story and battle system the way it was.
Only FFs post-PS1 era that I have really enjoyed were Tactics Advance (seriously like crack...200+ hours invested) and the FFVIII remaster (which is pretty much identical to the OG with aesthetic refinements).

I always had a bit of a love hate relationship with FF. The visual design and worldbuilding can be outstanding, but the stories tend to be a bit juvenile and the mechanics incredibly clunky. Even replaying FF6 - a game many would regard as the highlight of the series - on the SNES Classic felt a bit like a chore at times.
Xenoblade is mostly what scratches that itch for me now as it's got the same strengths but improves considerably on the weaknesses. I'd also, put in a word for Fantasian - one of the hidden gems of Apple Arcade - from another ex-FF creator.

Probably Zelda. Once over I would be all over new releases, eagerly anticipating for months. Last one I really enjoyed was twilight Princess. Shame really butbI have the old ones to play through again.

I'd also, put in a word for Fantasian - one of the hidden gems of Apple Arcade - from another ex-FF creator. I loved FFVI as it was one of the few RPGs I can recall where the villain actually succeeded in his world destruction plans. When you get the second half of the game with the ruined world and eventual battle against a clown-turned-deity...well, it was pretty epic. The music is fantastic (especially the "Dancing Mad" arrangements at the end) and there are some neat bits such as the pantomine/show thing with that octopus boss.
I completed it on GBA back when I had an original, boxed UK copy from new (how much THAT is worth today, I don't want to know...because I no longer own it lol).
Bad points for me were the outdated grinding and endless battles, as well as there being too many characters to train up for my liking. The grinding I didn't mind when I was younger (oo-er) but I couldn't be bothered with it now. I remember battling until I had loads of status effect-blocking ribbons and the item that reduces all MP cost to 1 so the mages could just spam Ultima over and over.
Another bad FFVI aspect was the PS1 port with it's diabolical loading times for battles and menus. The newly-added CG scenes had no chance of making up for that.
I haven't played the Xenoblade games but the last original Nintendo RPG that I adored was The Last Story. Difficulty just right, not too long, not too much grinding, and an incredible Uematsu OST.

When you think about it, the name is practically synonymous with Final (Last) Fantasy (Story).

Pro Evo and Football Manager.
Not sure why I stopped playing the Pro Evo games, left them behind when I moved to the 360 and XB1 I think, are they still as good these days?
Football Manager is purely because my ancient PC can't play the new versions, if I ever get round to getting a new PC then FM will be a 100% buy.
Also lost track of the Resident Evil games, R4 was amazing but never really bothered with anything since.

Pro Evo turned into eFootball - a digital-only F2P style game. The launch of the 2022 version was apparently a massive glitchy disaster. It's mad what happened to Pro Evo. It was as huge as FIFA in the PS2 era (especially around PES4-5) and I knew plenty who always bought both. Now it's pretty much been killed off by good old Konami. Is there ANYTHING that they don't bollocks up anymore?
