If you fell into the position where you could be hired to lead a team to remake any retro game what would you make, how would you want to go about it, what platform, how close or far from the original would you go ?
I would remake Buck Rogers Countdown to Doomsday, I would want it to be a indy sort of title not a triple A, I would be looking for Modernised but not over the top graphics.... I am thinking it would be to around the looks standard of the Xcom Enemy Unknown remake on the Xbox 360 with the on the ground/in space station parts going between a walk along explore sort of mode and then Xcom Tactical battle when you meet hostiles, throw in a semi elite type thing for the space battles and traveling, and I would want to get access to footage of ships and opening titles to the Buck Rogers TV show for the opening and cut scenes.

If I got hired, something really basic that wouldn’t be beyond my meagre capabilities.
If someone competent was hired, I would say R-Type Final. I picked up the recent sequel and … it left me cold, to be honest. Had hoped that the sequel would generate interest in the original, but so far it appears not.

I meant more your hired and you sit in the big chair and call the shots but you have a full team of artists programmers etc , so they can take your badly pencil drawn napkin sketches and ramblings and turn it into a game you'd want..... I couldn't programme a pong game given twenty years to try lol

Blast Corps from the N64. It was unique and brilliant at the time but while still a lot of fun, does feel dated now. Multi-platform. I wouldn't be bothered about it being AAA either. A similar isometric view for most levels, but perhaps some levels from inside the vehicle(s) to mix things up. Relatively realistic graphics would be cool to stay true to the original. Backlash would make a comeback and destruction would be maximum. There could be guest levels. Destroy Hyrule before the moon crashes down or a Mario Bros/Sonic level before Mario/Sonic reaches the end. A level editor would be awesome too. Did I imagine a Blast Corps level on the moon? Backlash and zero gravity has got to happen. Guest vehicles from other games too? Edit: I just googled to see who owns the Blast Corps IP, and Microsoft renewed the trademark only last month: www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/07/microsoft-renews-trademark-for-rares-classic-n64-game-blast-corps

I think Blast Corps is a great shout, happy to hear that Microsoft have renewed the IP so it's not totally forgotten.

As I would see mentioned in the RG magazines themselves, the term "Retro" is super subjective as to what = that for you. For me retro = anything of 1-2 generations prior consoles wise.
I would remake Command and Conquer 4 to actually be like the other games in the franchise, rather than what they did, which was going for a completely new style of gameplay, which effectively killed the franchise. Metroid Prime I'd give the demake treatment to and turn it into a 2D Metroidvania. Demons and Dark Souls turned 2D metroidvania be quite interesting as well. Though we kinda have that already (with the game Blasphemous).
Demaking either any of the 3D Metal Gears, or Medal of Honor games into something more akin to Commando (the arcade game) be interesting.

Speaking of C&C, I really enjoyed what Petroglyph did with their remakes of the first two games in the series. If they're ever up for doing the rest of the good ones, my services are available.
Not that they'd be needing them, of course.

Two spring to mind:
1. A remake of N64 Body Harvest. An underrated, open world game that could have a lot more detail and content with the power of modern consoles. I would make sure it had Global/Earth Defence Force style combat or something similar.
2. A remake of Fighters Megamix retaining all of the Virtua Fighter, Fighting Vipers, and AM2 characters but also adding in loads more from the likes of Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Yakuza etc

I would love to see Ichiban from Like a Dragon baseball batting the Dwarf from Golden Axe in , or Skate jumping on the back of various Virtua Fighters and smacking them in the head.

Ah, I’ve just been thinking about another one - Lost Odyssey. Okay, it’s only a couple of generations old, but I do feel as though it could benefit from an upscale and an increase to 60FPS. I’m sure it would still look great today.

Something like Lego Island would be cool to see again. The original has its problems but still a fun time. A remake would be cool to see, with some modern visuals, but not hyper realistic, and a lot of bug fixes. Would also be cool to see the Duke Nukem platformers be revived in either Mega Man 9 and 10 retro style or Mega Man 11 modern style.

Alisia Dragoon. It's the most underrated action platformer on the Mega Drive, and a remake could introduce it to a much deserved wider audience.

Something like Lego Island would be cool to see again. I remember wanting to play that when it was new but didn't ever get around to it. I remember it being on the PC but was it also on the PS1?
I seem to remember there also being a stunt game and a "Racers" game at pretty much the same time.
