So, Kirby's Air Ride was mentioned in another thread, as one of the notoriously difficult to find and expensive Gamecube games (at least in PAL - no idea about other regions). It made me wonder...is it actually any good after you've gone to the effort and expense of acquiring a copy?
And what other games are there that are DEFINITELY not good games at all, even though they command big sums of cash or take ages to physically find?
One that springs to mind immediately is Darxide on the 32X - a notoriously rare PAL 32X game worth crazy money, yet the game itself is not meant to be all that special at all.
Then there are the masses of hyper-obscure and collectible PS2 games from the likes of 505, Agetec, and Essential Games that can be somewhat expensive, short in supply, but are often just crap games that will only appeal to a tiny number of gamers.

90% of 2600 games apply here. Almost all teh good games are cheap, then you get into the expensive bad ones

I had Gotcha Force on the Cube at one point, got it for £12 missing manaual, played it a bit thought it was rubbish and sold it on for £40 I kind of regret that as its now worth more and rare but I dont like it so I wouldnt buy it again unless it stumbled into my lap for next to nothing..... I just wouldnt spend masses on a game I didnt like or knew was rubbish as you can spend that money on other games, thats why I never get people going for whole system collections as there will be that point they will have to pay loads for rubbish games.

The cycle goes as follows:
1. Nobody wanted bad games back in the day. 2. They sold poorly and there are few copies in circulation. 3. Decades later, collectors want to pick up full sets for older systems. 4. They end up in bidding wars trying to get the rarer games. 5. The bad games end up being worth far more than the good ones.
One of the craziest collectables is educational software for the ZX Spectrum. There are loads of copies of Survival and Make-A-Chip because they were bundled with new computers for a while. However, everything else in the catalogue is very rare, because few schools went with the Spectrum (the BBC Micro got pushed a lot harder to them) and they're the sting in the tail for anyone trying to pick up a full set.

Deli Soba for Saturn comes to mind.
If was a Japanese, promo-only game, IIRC and plays like an unfinished version of Road Rash 3D, but commands crazy high prices.

Conkers Bad Fur day for N64.
Okay, it's actually a pretty good game in all fairness.
But it still goes for WTF prices now!

I'll be controversial and say that Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of those totally rare, expensive games that aren't worth the hundreds of quid they go for now....i think thats probably obvious, but some will continue to claim its a great game, especially those that own it and like to inform others they own "PANZER DRAGOON SAGA" on the Saturn. Nah man, its overrated RPG shite....the best Panzer Dragoon game was on the Xbox, and that is far more affordable, and doesn't look like a 3D pigs ear like Saga does now. I suppose if you love mesh transparencies, it might look ok

Doom for the 3DO. A rushed port that frankly is an embarrassment to the Doom name.

Star Fox Assault is probably one of these games. I never owned it and only had a dabble on it but I believe only 4 of the 10 levels (the traditional flying levels) are any good. Reviews old and new generally reflect this but it doesn't seem to have knocked the games desirability and price.

I got a loose disc copy of Assault cheap somewhere like £5 or under I cant remember it was ages ago, its ok but its not brilliant, so not worth chasing for big money

There's stuff like Fatal Fury Special on Mega CD (PAL) that cost more than a NEO GEO AES with a copy of Fatal Fury Special. I get that there are full set collectors and it's a rare title, but it's available on other systems for much less and in some cases is much better. Similar story with Samurai Shodown on the Mega CD. In fact, almost all of the high end Mega CD games (in PAL territories) are not worth anything like their prices now. Snatcher may be the exception, although that's not even that rare, just hugely in demand.

Blues Brothers on the Super Nintendo. Played that for a first time a few days ago. Very mediocre for a rare game.

The Arwing stages are very good, but the on-foot and Landmaster tank stuff was dishwater dull imo. You just want to get back into the air.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I bought it based on screenshots and thought it looked like all manner of arcade awesomeness. Instead it was a shitty sprawling platform game with a rubbish weapon. At least that's how I felt in 1998 or whatever!

I usually try to get most of the games featuring Nintendo's IPs but that's one that doesn't bother me not owning. I did really enjoy Starfox Adventures though so that's my GameCube Starfox fix.
