I am planning to buy the Japanese version of the Mini Drive 2. Sure it will be in Japanese but it has a lot of good Genesis games to try it out that I haven't played it before and they have more Sega CD games than the Western version especially the Lunar series.
What about you guys? What are your thoughts and which version you are planning to buy?

I might buy the pal version. I own two of the 1st megadrive mini,s I got one to hack and one to keep normal but I'm not sure suppose it depends on financial obligations near its release.

I don't see the point in it personally (as i already own the Megadrive Mini). Yes, it has a different collection of games on, but whos kidding anyone here that their Megadrive Mini 1 isn't already modded with every single of those Megadrive Mini 2 games already!
Plus the Megadrive 2 looks rubbish, much prefer the original consoles look...especially with the Mega/Sega CD add-on!

They also make tons of these things, rare they are not. Do they at least add the 6-button controllers in this time?

You're worried about the controller it comes with? Check out this bad boy: www.gamesradar.com/the-mega-drive-mini-2-console-is-getting-a-dollar150-controller/More seriously though, these things always just end up as knickknacks for the shelf. I suppose there are bunch of games on there that'd be difficult, or at least expensive, to pick up legit copies of otherwise. If you want it for that, fine. I'm sure that all of us already have access to better through emulation though.

Yeah I bet they will use the same hardware, kind of makes sense to do so, and I can see why some would not be excited by these seeing as by now mini consoles are well trodden ground.

Despite being a huge Sega fan, I'm completely indifferent to the MD Mini. I cant summon up an ounce of excitement for games I've been emulating since 1998.
Sorry to be a bummer but while I think it'll be worth having, we've been able to play these games for years on 100 different machines.

Sega has somewhat devalued these things with the early stream of cheap crappy ATGames DTV products. There's just been so many of them, there's always been one around, so there's nothing special in another one hitting the market.

I think the Megadrive Mini and the emulation underneath it, is perhaps a bit better than the ATGames stuff....and its emulation is relatively solid with M2 behind it. The first one was interesting enough, but this seems more of a replica with an uglier shell and different ROMs on it.

The first one was interesting enough, but this seems more of a replica with an uglier shell and different ROMs on it. That's pretty spot on, the AT games consoles were iffy emulation wise but it was cool that some had cartridge slots. I got one second hand from a charity shop for about Β£10 and messed around with it, it felt cheap and hollow and I'm not even sure where it is... M2 did a lot better job with the emulation and the machine itself feels a lot higher quality, I prefer the Megadrive 1 shell but I think with the new one there going with the new one there going with the Megadrive 2 shell just to be different.

Well that's great for the hardcore few, but for the mass market, they aren't going to distinguish between them. It's just another Mega Drive. The psychological long term impact of ATGames is an issue that Sony and Nintendo don't have with their minis.

Yeah Sega Deffinetly dropped a Clanger by letting AT Games release those machines.

While I have a collection of other mini consoles, I donβt have the first Mega Drive Mini yet - so would want that as well as the second one
