Typical! If I'd known, I may have waited.

I'm not keen on the analog stick placement being at the bottom of the console. For me, this is thumb cramp territory.
Swing and a miss.

Yeah, I'd think that the only system that it's going to give a big lift to is the PSP, where you actually want the stick there and it's also got more or less the correct aspect ratio for the screen.
For everything else, it's a case of six of one versus half a dozen of the other. It's bigger, pricier, all the 4:3 systems will lose a lot of the extra screen size to letterboxing, and you're still looking at something like the Odin if you want to play a lot of PS2 and GameCube games.

Might have to look at this! I do fancy some DC and 32bit gaming on the go. Does it do much Saturn or is that platform still borked for emu (as people have been saying for years)? Saturn emulation is probably better than you think, but still nowhere near as good as for the PS1 or N64. Lots of games run at full speed and with upscaling but you're a long way short of being able to play everything and there's also the button layout to contend with. I'd tend to see it as a nice bonus rather than a reason in itself. You can check out the compatibility sheet for it and other systems here:
Ah, that's a shame, but not unexpected. I see that two of my favourites - Fighting Vipers and Fighters Megamix - both have glitchy stage floors which is a big bummer. Also, thinking about it, I'd want to play the Capcom fighters so the button layout wouldn't be ideal, and there's no mention of the Jap stuff on that sheet.

OK, so Retroid is here... now to add emulators. I'll be going retro retro and installing a C64 emu first.
Are there sites with pre-setup stuff done or is there lots of pissing around?
I'm going to download all Mastertronic games and work my way through the new Mastertronic book!

Taki Udon has a setup guide here covering the systems supported by the Retroid Launcher:
C64 isn't one of those though, so you'll probably want to set up a stand alone emulator. If you've already picked up C64.emu for another Android device just install that, otherwise Mobile C64 is a good free one. The venerable Frodo still works too, but hasn't been updated in ages. Oh, and you'll probably want to pair a Bluetooth keyboard for anything that can't be played almost entirely with a joystick.

OK, so I finally sorted out putting emulators on this thing. Tried Frodo for the C64 but gave up. Then looked at RetroArch - an app I'd installed (or is it just there) and it has C64 emulation. Bit of mucking around and I'm playing 1985 by Mastertronic - the 1st game in the new Mastertronic book. I'm going to attempt to download and play every game in order of the reviews I'm hoping this will start bringing me back into gaming! But holy shit, 1985 is a hard bastard to play

And so it begins.. 😀
Before long you'll be tinkering with Gamecube settings and trying to get PS2 Auto Modrllista running.
Enjoy!

Having emulated everything up to PS1 for over a decade now, I'm semi-keen on these newer ones that do PS2 well but things like the Ayo Neo Air or whatever are mad expensive at the moment.
It'll be a while but my biting point for perfect PS2 and GC is about £300 and even then it'd be a struggle.

I keep looking at an RP2, but having just bought a cheap RG350, I can't justify it at the minute.

The main thing going for them was the build quality, and that still holds up well.

Yeah. To be honest, when it comes to portable play, I'm happy with 8 & 16bit games.

I've really tried hard to enjoy this little gizmo but it's such a ballache to set up the controls for the C64 emulation in RetroArch!!! Got to the stage where I just can't be arsed.
I may need to spend a bit of time uninstalling everything and starting fresh. Even loading files is a pain in the arse.

I may need to spend a bit of time uninstalling everything and starting fresh. Even loading files is a pain in the arse. That's a combination of 2 things. Setting up controls in RetroArch is a pain, and setting up any sort of C64 emulation is also a pain.

It has to be said that emulating any home computer on a device without a keyboard is going to be quite limiting, because nearly all games will assume it's there even if you only need the occasional key press and RetroArch will not give you much help unless you pair one via Bluetooth. Devices like the C64 Mini only work without one because they modified the game images to use the extra buttons on the joystick instead.
Using a stand alone emulator rather than RetroArch can ease the pain a bit, as they'll offer a virtual keyboard to type things in on and handle things like disk management a lot better into the bargain. Still, good luck with anything that needs an actual keyboard to play though, e.g. Elite.
