I've really tried hard to enjoy this little gizmo but it's such a ballache to set up the controls for the C64 emulation in RetroArch!!! Got to the stage where I just can't be arsed. I may need to spend a bit of time uninstalling everything and starting fresh. Even loading files is a pain in the arse. That's a combination of 2 things. Setting up controls in RetroArch is a pain, and setting up any sort of C64 emulation is also a pain. C64 Emulation has always been a piece of piss though. There is a virtual keyboard on RetroArch but setting up controls is a complete joke! The file system is not too good either. I'll try a stand alone Emu. As for keyboard being needed, the majority of C64 games when I was a kid were Joystick port 2 and next to no keyboard control options!

You certainly didn't need to use the keyboard a lot on the C64, especially if you were just playing arcade games. It's just that not having one at all often leaves you wanting when picking the options or just starting a game.
Anyway, give C64 Mobile a shot. There's a free version and it's considerably less bewildering to set up than RetroArch. I've not used it much on mine, but was able to play a few games of Kikstart II and Gridrunner within a few minutes of installing it, so it can't be that hard to get to grips with.

What they need to do is make something that's got the power of these new Aya Neo type handhelds (ie; ones that can run PS2 comfortably) but with the best form factor which was the clamshell design of the GPD XD.

Aya announced a clamshell version of the Neo a while back, funnily enough: That said, it's probably going to be a bit too big to be pocket sized and rather expensive, because everything else that they make is. Given that you're essentially getting the power of a medium sized laptop in something about the size of a Switch Lite with their latest handhelds anyway, I'm not sure how much smaller and cheaper they could make them without having to compromise something badly.

They're on to the Pocket 3+ now. www.goretroid.com/collections/retro-game-system/products/retroid-pocket-3-handheld-retro-gaming-system-1It's yet another incremental improvement rather than a radical step up in emulation capabilities; it'll shore up the GameCube and PS2 a bit in terms of making games that are borderline on the 2+ running better, but that's about it. There's just a vast leap in the level of performance required to do those systems over the likes of PSP and Dreamcast. There are bigger gains to be had on the Android front - thanks to having twice the CPU cores, twice the RAM and a more advanced GPU - in that it'll now run things like eFootball and Genshin Impact. Basically, it's now what you'd expect of a mid-range phone rather than a budget one. That doesn't sound too bad for $149, although there'll probably be another model in a few more months that'll do even more. I'm still happy enough with the 2+ for now.

I am seriously tempted to get one of these now, just to have a single device with multiple systems on it rather than the host of modded and hacked consoles/handhelds that I currently have or have considered.
Having PSP and GBA in the same place for starters would be good.
I currently have my original PSP-3000 with CFW on the mem card and all my games on there (long since sold my physical collection) but there's always that worry that the battery will be fucked soon (it's still the original) so "updating" to something new that can still play the games would be nice.
GBA too - I had been considering a modded original shape machine with backlight and a flashcart but if it works flawlessly on the Retroid, why bother?

Related news: the Android aetherSX2 PS2 emulator is being discontinued in terms of updates and developments. Apparently the dev was just the one guy, and he has had enough of complaints, demands, people impersonating him, and even death threats!!!

I was hoping that it was the other ps2 emu you were referring to.

Yeah, it's not the end of the world. AetherSX2 is in pretty good shape as it is. Even if development ends here, it'll do a job with most PS2 games. Your main problem is finding a device where performance won't be an issue for the more demanding end of the library.
The whole thing just blew up far bigger than Tahlreth was ever expecting, and with many more users overall, you're going to get more entitled idiots.
I dare say that he has some options going forward, and an eventual return to development isn't out of the question, perhaps by assembling a team or going open source. PCSX2, which it is largely based around, already works that way.
Mainly though, he just deserves a break and a chance to reflect that he created something that was overwhelmingly a positive experience for most of the 1.2 million people who downloaded and used it. For all he's had to endure, it's not like there isn't far more he should have the right to feel good about.

My love for my RP2+ is showing no signs of diminishing. Its my contant companion if I leave the house. Work, play, anything. I even have it with me for if my metal detecting sesh gets rained off.
However, I spent 3 hours yesterday trying to get a single game running under C64 emulation. Any game, mind, unsuccessfully.
I used retroarch, 2 free emulators and even paid 3.95 for Frodo. I think I'm maybe too stupid to figure it out, but I've been tinkering with emulation for 20 years, I thought I had half a chance. Nope 😞
How do I run Armalyte or Golden Axe?

My RP2+ has been in a draw for some time now due to the difficulty in getting C64 emulation working. I can get games running but it's such a bloody faff and then trying to map the game to the controller... that's almost impossible!!!! I wanted to C64 on the go with this little thing. Currently I can't. So it stays in the draw.

But it's such a bastard to set up and even after getting a game running, next time I go into it, I have to set it up again. I'll add to that I've not got many games running with the controllers working.

I took a real notion to play Armalyte. I used to love that title. And Golden Axe of course. I get to the character choosing screen on GA then it goes to a blank screen. I may try a different room and see if that helps. The RP2+ should map the controls automatically.

As an aside, the Gamecube version of Burnout 2 runs like a dream on RP2+. I've physically owned this title for years but never played it. (I thought the first Burnout was a bit vanilla, tbh). What a great game B2 is. I know I'm 20 years late with the news but 😀
